Icon "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" Rome, (XV cent.)

Workshop of St. Anthony

  • $50.00

This is the copy of the famous icon “Our Lady of Perpetual Help”.  The earliest written account of the image comes from a Latin and Italian plaque placed in the church of San Matteo in Via Merulana where it was first venerated by the public in 1499. The writer of the icon is unknown. A special way of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary is directly related to the way through daily prayer on the rosary. The icon illustrates the sacred secrets of Christ's life: joyful (Child Jesus), grieving (cross, an instrument of passions) and glorious (golden background of icons). Pray for the help in life's tribulations and trials, the happy union of those who are in separation, the lonely and abandoned people, the healing of the spiritual and bodily infirmities.

The icon is created on a traditional wooden base and set a chalk-based natural glue (levkas). Afterward, the iconographer, using natural paints, transcribes the blessed image which is an exact copy of the original. Upon completion of the transcription, a few finishing touches are incorporated giving the icon a truly ancient appearance. Thanks to this technique, natural cracks begin to appear on the icons, replicating original icon of the medieval period.
